Change file properties

Get a shot to sit exactly where you want it: centered on a face, filling a vertical frame edge to edge, or timed to land a cut precisely on a beat. Position, size, rotation and speed all live in one place, whether you'd rather drag things by eye on the canvas or dial in exact numbers on the right.

Applies to video clips and images on the B-Roll, A-Roll or Overlays lanes.

Select a clip

Click a video clip or an image on the timeline and it gets an outline in the canvas, with a small circle at each of its four corners. The side panel on the right switches automatically: to its Video tab for a video clip, or its Image tab for an image. The two work the same way, except an image has no Speed field, since there's no playback to speed up or slow down.

Confirm what's selected

At the top of the tab: the file's name, its length, then its dimensions and format underneath. Click the name to see the file's full details, or click Replace to swap it for a different one from your library.

Fit it to the frame

One row of buttons handles all of this. Fill frame scales the clip up to cover the whole frame. Anything that extends past the edges stays hidden rather than being cut away, so moving or resizing the clip afterward can still bring it back into view. Fit whole picture scales it down so the entire original shot stays visible, which can leave empty space on the sides or top and bottom if its proportions don't match your frame.

Next to those, six more buttons in the same row align the clip: three for horizontal position, left, center or right, and three for vertical, top, center or bottom.

Move, resize, rotate and retime it

Every field below works the same way. Click and drag its arrow icon left or right to change the value, or click into the number itself and type an exact one.

Position has two fields: the left one moves the clip horizontally, the right one vertically. Double click either icon to reset it to how it was when the clip first landed on the timeline.

Size also has two fields, one for width and one for height, linked by default so changing one scales the other with it and the clip keeps its proportions. Click the link icon to change width and height independently, which will stretch or squash the image. Click it again to lock them back together, and it's the ratio you're at then that gets kept from that point on, not the original one. Double click either arrow icon to reset it the same way.

Rotation turns the clip by degrees. Drag the rotate icon around, or type a value directly.

Speed changes a video clip's playback speed. Type a value on the right, or drag the slider: right to speed it up, left to slow it down.

Adjust it directly on the canvas

Everything above has a hands-on equivalent right on the canvas, and it behaves the same whether the clip is on B-Roll, A-Roll or an Overlays lane.

With the clip selected, drag anywhere inside it to move it. It snaps to the frame's center and edges as you get close, so lining something up is quick even without the position fields. Drag one of the four corner circles to resize it. Move just past a corner, and your cursor turns into a curved double-headed arrow. From there, drag to rotate.

Double click a selected clip to crop it. Its outline gains four extra handles, one on each side: top, bottom, left and right. Drag any of them in, then click anywhere else on the canvas to confirm the crop. From there the cropped version behaves exactly like any other clip, so you can still move, resize, rotate or retime it the same as before.

If any of this doesn't turn out how you wanted, Cmd + Z on a Mac, Ctrl + Z on Windows undoes it, the same as anywhere else in Solid.

With the shot sized and positioned, adjust the look next to dial in its color and light.
