Connect Solid via MCP
If you already work with an AI assistant like Claude, you can connect it to your Solid workspace over MCP and ask it to work with your library directly, without switching over to Solid to do it by hand.
This is different from the Chat panel built into Solid itself, covered in What Chat can do: that one lives inside a project and helps with the script and edit in front of you. This connects Solid to an assistant you're already using elsewhere, so you can reach your workspace from wherever you're working.
What this connects
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets an AI assistant securely reach an outside tool and act on your behalf there, the way a browser extension gives a site extra abilities. You don't need to know anything about it to use it: you paste one address into the assistant, sign in, and pick which Solid workspace to connect. Only that workspace becomes reachable, and you can connect a different one later the same way.
The address is https://mcp.solidlabs.com/mcp.
Solid doesn't have its own listing in these directories of ready-made connectors yet, so for now you add it by hand as a custom connector, using that address, rather than picking it from a list.
Connect Claude
These steps are from Claude's web app. The desktop app should look the same. If something's changed, or you run into trouble, check Claude's own help article on custom connectors.
- Click your profile icon in the bottom left corner, then go to Customize > Connectors.
- Click Add.
- Name it Solid and paste in the address above. Further down, Claude shows what it detected about how Solid's server handles sign-in: leave Authentication and OAuth client on whichever option is already marked Detected, that's the right choice here. Click Continue.
- Claude adds Solid to your list of connectors. Click Connect on its page to sign in.
- A window opens asking you to approve the connection. Choose the Solid workspace you want connected, then click Approve.
Back in Claude, Solid now shows as connected, with a list of tool permissions underneath it that you can adjust to your liking, for example switching a tool from needing your approval each time to always allowed. The defaults work fine to start with.
If you're on a Claude Team or Enterprise plan, an organization owner adds the connector once under Organization settings > Connectors, and everyone else then connects their own account from Customize > Connectors.
What you can do with it
When you approve the connection, Claude shows you exactly what it's asking for:
- See your files, scenes, folders, video projects and tags
- Create video projects, folders and tags, and tag your media
- Read and update brand guidelines and creative direction
This is for teams who already lean on an AI assistant day to day and want Solid to fit into that flow. Nothing about it is required to use Solid normally.
