TopView demands five times the bitrate of In-Feed

In-Feed asks for 516 kbps or above. TopView asks for 2,500 kbps. Same platform, same 9:16 frame, a floor nearly five times higher — and it is the single most-missed TikTok requirement, because nothing in an export dialog warns you about it.

TopView also runs five to sixty seconds with nine to fifteen recommended, where In-Feed will take up to ten minutes. A clip cut for one is not automatically valid for the other.

TikTok accepts far smaller frames than anyone publishes

The floor for 9:16 In-Feed is 540×960 — a quarter of the pixels in 1080×1920. Landscape 16:9 is accepted from 960×540 and square 1:1 from 640×640. TikTok publishes no recommended resolution for In-Feed at all; 1080×1920 is the platform-wide convention rather than a stated figure, which is worth knowing before you re-export something that was already fine.

Spark Ads have no ad spec, because they are not ads

A Spark Ad promotes a post that already exists on TikTok, so it inherits that post’s length and TikTok states no duration restriction. The accepted containers narrow to .mp4 and .mov, and everything else follows the organic post.

This is why the placement matters more than the platform: “what are the TikTok ad specs” has three correct answers depending on which of these you are buying.

The safe zone in circulation is often the retired one

TikTok replaced its safe-zone template in April 2025. The pre-2025 numbers are genuinely TikTok-official and genuinely obsolete, and much of the web still quotes them. A third widely-republished set matches no TikTok file at all, current or archived — it is internally consistent, which is why it spreads.

The overlay above is measured from the alpha channel of TikTok’s current template rather than copied from a table.

The red areas come from the safe-zone reference, which measures each platform’s own template and shows where every margin came from.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the TikTok ad specs?

In-Feed accepts 9:16 from 540×960, 16:9 from 960×540 and 1:1 from 640×640, in .mp4, .mov, .mpeg, .3gp or .avi, up to 10 minutes and 500 MB, at a bitrate of 516 kbps or above. TopView is 9:16 only, five to sixty seconds with nine to fifteen recommended, 500 MB, and 2,500 kbps or above. Spark Ads take .mp4 or .mov with no duration restriction.

What size should a TikTok ad be?

9:16 vertical is what the placements are built for, and 1080×1920 is the usual export. TikTok’s actual minimum for 9:16 is 540×960. Horizontal 16:9 and square 1:1 are accepted for In-Feed but not for TopView.

How long can a TikTok ad be?

In-Feed goes up to ten minutes. TopView runs five to sixty seconds, with nine to fifteen recommended. Spark Ads carry no restriction because they promote an existing organic post and inherit its length.

What bitrate does TikTok require?

516 kbps or above for In-Feed, and 2,500 kbps or above for TopView. The TopView floor catches people out because it is nearly five times higher for a frame of exactly the same size.

What is the TikTok safe zone?

On the current In-Feed template, 240 pixels at the top, 660 at the bottom and 120 on each side of a 1080×1920 frame — with the right margin widening to 300 below the halfway point, where the action rail sits. That is 12.5% top, 34.375% bottom and 11.111% sides, measured from TikTok’s own downloadable template.

What is the maximum TikTok ad file size?

500 MB across the placements — considerably tighter than Meta’s 4 GB or YouTube’s 256 GB, and the limit most likely to force a re-encode.
