The numbers everyone republishes are the wrong ones
Almost every ad-specs page on the web gives 1080×1920 as Meta’s recommended resolution. Meta’s own placement pages say 1440×2560 for 9:16 and 1440×1800 for 4:5. Neither figure is wrong exactly — 1080×1920 is what the platform accepts and what most people export — but only one of them is what Meta actually recommends, and a page that cannot tell you which is which is not a reference.
The same goes for minimums. Meta’s floor is 250 pixels wide, TikTok accepts 9:16 from 540×960 and YouTube from 720×1280. A creator told they “need” 1080×1920 is being handed a recommendation as a requirement.
Where a platform contradicts itself, both figures are here
Meta publishes Instagram Stories video as one second to sixty minutes on its Ads Guide placement page, and one to a hundred and twenty seconds on its own video-requirements one-sheeter. That is a thirty-fold disagreement between two Meta documents, neither of which mentions the other. Facebook Stories and Instagram Feed carry the same split.
Rather than pick one and present it as settled, this page shows both and says which document each came from. The disagreement is the thing you cannot resolve on your own — and it is the reason the spec you copied from somewhere else may not match what Ads Manager accepts.
Duration is a property of the placement, not the platform
YouTube publishes one resolution set and five different duration limits. A bumper is capped at six seconds. Non-skippable in-stream runs fifteen to sixty depending on campaign subtype. Skippable in-stream and in-feed have no published ceiling at all, and Shorts has a recommendation rather than a limit.
That is why everything here is keyed to a placement. A single “YouTube ad specs” row would have to choose one of those five and be wrong about the other four.
Spark Ads and TopView are not the same spec
TikTok’s TopView demands a bitrate of 2,500 kbps — nearly five times the 516 kbps floor for In-Feed — and runs five to sixty seconds, with nine to fifteen recommended. Spark Ads, which promote a post that already exists, inherit that post’s length and carry no duration restriction at all.
Three TikTok placements, three different answers to “how long can my ad be”.
The red areas come from the safe-zone reference, which measures each platform’s own template and shows where every margin came from.
FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the Meta ad specs?
Meta recommends 1440×2560 for 9:16 placements (Reels and Stories on both Instagram and Facebook) and 1440×1800 for 4:5 feed placements. All of them accept MP4, MOV and GIF up to 4 GB, with H.264 video, square pixels, a fixed frame rate, progressive scan and stereo AAC audio at 128 kbps or above. Minimum width is 250 pixels, rising to 500 for Reels ads of 30 seconds or longer.
What are the TikTok ad specs?
In-Feed accepts 9:16 from 540×960, 16:9 from 960×540 and 1:1 from 640×640, in .mp4, .mov, .mpeg, .3gp or .avi, up to 10 minutes and 500 MB, at 516 kbps or above. TopView is 9:16 only, five to sixty seconds with nine to fifteen recommended, and demands 2,500 kbps. Spark Ads have no duration restriction because they promote an existing organic post.
What are the YouTube ad specs?
YouTube recommends 1920×1080 for 16:9, 1080×1920 for 9:16 and 1080×1080 for square, with minimums of 1280×720, 720×1280 and 480×480. File size goes to 256 GB. Duration depends entirely on the format: bumper ads are capped at six seconds, non-skippable in-stream runs 15 to 60 seconds by campaign subtype, and skippable in-stream, in-feed and Shorts have no published ceiling.
Does my video get uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read by your own browser — dimensions and duration come from a video element, and the preview frame is drawn to a canvas on your machine. Nothing is sent to a server, so there is nothing to delete afterwards and no account to make.
Why does the preview crop my clip?
Because the platforms do. A 16:9 upload into a 9:16 slot is centre-cropped, not letterboxed, so the preview shows the same crop you would get in Ads Manager. If the framing looks wrong here it will look wrong there.
What is the difference between ad specs and safe zones?
Specs are what the platform will accept: resolution, aspect ratio, duration, file size, codec. A safe zone is where the platform draws its own interface over your frame once it has accepted it — the caption, the username, the action rail, the call-to-action button. An ad can pass every spec and still have its headline hidden behind a button. The safe-zone reference covers the second half.
How current are these numbers?
Every figure carries the URL it came from and the date that URL was last checked, both shown beside the number. The set is re-checked quarterly. Where a platform’s own documents disagree, both figures are shown rather than one being silently chosen.
